FanArt and Original Art - CS2023

It has become a tradition, that Comics Salon gives young artists using the comics, scifi, fantasy, horror or manga style the chance to participate in this contest. But not just artist, but also all fans of these styles are welcome. If you are interested in entering in or would like to participate in voting for the entered artwork do not hesitate and read on.

You may compete and vote in there categories.

Fan Art:

Artwork that meats the following conditions may be entered in the “Fan Art” category:

- Reference for the artwork is an existing work, that is protected by copyright (Book, movie, scifi, fantasy, horror, manga, comics, anime,…)
- No part of the artwork may be directly taken (“copied”...) from existing artwork.

Original Art:

Artwork that meats the following conditions may be entered in the “Original Art” category:

- Artwork where no reference was used or the referenced work is not protected by copyright. The idea and the realization is considered original..
- Reference for the artwork may be real people, animals or things (not photos or paintings,…).
- No part of the artwork may be directly taken (“copied”...) from existing artwork.

All artwork and competitors must meet that following conditions:
- Artwork must be of 2-dimensial character, standard A5 to A3 format (or corresponding standard format, i.e. half of letter format to twice letter format).
- Acceptable techniques are drawing, painting (their combination), computer graphic, … (Not photograph, sculpture, 3D model, costume,…)
- One competitor may enter a maximum of 2 works in each category (4 in total for both categories).
- The artwork must be delivered to the staff by 9. September 2019. (You may deliver them by mail or in person.)
- Each competitor must fill out, sign and send the application that you may download here -> APPLICATION
- Artwork must not contain violence, blood (and other bodily fluids), nudity, sexual undertone, guro, hentai, yaoi, yuri, lolicon, shotacon or other disturbing or illegal themes. Artwork should be suitable for viewing by all ages.
- Artwork must not be publicly presented elsewhere or entered in other contest prior to this one.

Artwork that does not meet there conditions will be disqualified.

If you do not wish to display the original, please send a printed copy. Comics Salon 2019 will not pay for the printing and shipping cost. Copies will not be returned to the authors. Originals will be sent back only if an envelope with and address and stamp is provided.

How do I vote?
The artwork will be displayed at Comics Salon 2019 and each visitor will receive and voting card that he/she may fill out and submit.

When will I know how won?
The results will be announced at Comics Salon 2019 after the votes are counted.

What is copyright?
You can find information concerning copyright at the following web page: Wikipedia – Copyright

I copied and picture of Naruto/Sailor Moon/Bleach/ ... May I enter it in the contest?
No.

I created my own character for Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter/Naruto/Final Fantasy/... May I enter it in the Original-art category?
No. Fan made characters belong in the Fan-art categoryt.

I took a screen shot form Inuyasha/Naruto/Pokemon/..., redrew the hair and changed the background may I enter it in the contest?
No.

I found a picture on the Internet and it doesn’t belong to anyone may i enter it in the contest?
No. You may only enter artwork that you have created yourself.

I drew a picture of new born Jesus in maga sstyle, may I enter it in the Original-art category?
Yes, the Bible is not protected by copyright.

I drew a picture of little red riding hood/... may I enter it in the Original-art category?
Yes. Old stories like this are no longer protected by copyright.

I really like artwork form Alfonz Mucha and I drew something similar is it Original-art?
No. Work like this belongs in the Fan-art, because the realization is not original.

I drew Stevena Segal/Jennifer Aniston/Leonardo DiCaprio/... using a photo from the internet as reference, may I enter it in the Origina-art category?
No, work like this may not be entered in any category. Artwork that uses a photo as reference is not allowed in the contest.

I drew a picture all by myself, I only copied the hands from some picture, may I enter it in the Original-art category?
N No, work like this may not be entered in any category. If you cant draw something, try using a mirror or asking a friend to pose for you.

I drew a picture and my friend colored it. May I enter it in the contest?
Yes, but be sure to write the names of both authors and each one of you must fill out and sign the application separately.

I made a sculpture of Spiderman/Sasuke/Lina Inverse/... from clay and took a photo of it, may I enter the photo in the contest?
No.

If I don’t enter any artwork in the Fan-art category, may I enter 4 works in to Original-art category?
No. Each competitor may enter 0 to 2 works in the Fan-art category and 0 to 2 works to the Original-art category.

Do I have to send 2 works to each category?
No. Each competitor may enter 0 to 2 works in the Fan Art category and 0 to 2 works to the Original-art category.

When is the deadline?
September 19. 2019. If you are sending the artwork by “snail mail” it has to reach us by this date.

I don’t feel like sending something by mail, can’t I just bring it with me when I come to Comics Salon 2019?
No. Due to organization reasons the artwork must reach is by September 19. 2019 so if you are sending it by “snail mail” be sure to send it sooner so it will arrive by then.

May I scan it and send it via email?
No. We cant display the electronic form in the wall.

I made my picture using a computer how am I supposed to send it?
Print it and sent the print by regular mail.

I don’t want my picture to be displayed on the Internet…
If you do not agree with the rules, we can’t accept your artwork into the contest.

I have a really cool picture on deviantART may I enter it in the contest?
No, the artwork may not be publicly presented prior to the contest.

How come I can’t enter any yaoi, yuri, ... is that not an expression of discrimination towards homosexuals?!
You may enter works containing shonen-ai or shojo-ai themes, we are not discriminating anyone.

What is guro, hentai, yaoi, yuri, ...?
If you don’t know what it is then you probably do not draw such themes therefore you don’t have to worry about braking the rules.

I want my artwork back! Why didn’t you send it back to me?
You did not send us and envelope with an address and stamp therefore we can not send it back.

I don’t understand these rules and I have more questions.
